I'm a 37 year old gamer who has played games for decades, probably more then I should. I have a Bachelors in Psychology and a Minor in Telecommunications.
I love gaming in general, not just playing games. I keep up to date on the video game industry and am quite well versed in its developments. I am a avid fan of anime of all shapes and sizes, I have watched pretty much every good anime under the moon. Never underestimate a good anime.
I am very technically literate and enjoy reading up on the latest and greatest in computer hardware development, and of course discussing it. Feel free to ask for advice if you are unsure of what to do for a computer upgrade. Chances are I can either help you out or point you in the right direction.
Why am I here?: I have spent quite a bit of time talking to people online and in real life. I have made many friends in games and, of course, some enemies, but overall it's been a good experience and people generally enjoy talking to me. I thought it would be a good idea to bring my conversation to the rest of the internet and garner a larger following.
As I've aged it's relatively rare to come across something truely new or interesting, something that completely changes a genere - while Frieren is not that, it does something almost equally remarkable. It takes an anime genere, such as high fantasy, and makes it much more then any of it's predecessors has done before.
About the closest comparison you could possibly make to it is a relatively old, or not so old anime for me, called Record of Lodoss War. A relatively old, Tolkien fantasy stylized anime. Your basic elves, humans, dwarves, and daring heroic tales. Not much to it, much in the same way Frieren takes this on, starting out as what would consider a normal Tolkien tale, a slice of life anime if you will. While I'll do my best to not spoil the plot as that's something that you personally should experience yourself, the start of this series isn't where the series ends up.
Beginning with the end of the Demon King, a tale you don't even get to witness, you start following a elf. The difference between this tale and a normal one, is it doesn't extend to the lifetime of a human, it extends to a lifetime of a elf, and to that extent, you get to witness past, present, and future all unfold over the course of the story. A new tale begins, right when one is ending, and at the same time, you get to experience multiple stories happen, at the same time. The past which you never got to experience, the present which is where most animes start out, and the future as months, year, and sometimes decades take place.
This is not something that is normally ever done well or at all in any work. While some attempt to emphasize the passage of time as some sad story, rather then something that is beautiful and makes you enjoy every moment of life, Frieren does just that. Arguably the death of the Demon King, the story that you want to be part of, you find out the current one is almost just as good as that.
While this is a feat in and of itself, it doesn't just stop there. The characters, from all the timelines are flavorful and full of life, often times the anime slows down and tries to emphasize the importance of relationships, which usually drags, but never feels that way in the anime. But at the same time will often speed up and have beautifully intense battle sequences, with plenty of build up, something you only usually see in good shounens. Showing all the progress and training the characters went through, over years, bearing fruit.
...and at the same time you learn more about Frieren and her own innate qualities, all of which have their own ideological differences. Not just in terms of philosophy in how the characters interact, act, and teach magic, but in how the world now views magic as it's changed over the course of Frierens long life time.
While the anime isn't all action, and something like Kaisen will absolutely out do it in that regard, it's mant facets is what makes this anime wonderfully fantastic. I can't think of a single show that manages to pull off a slice-of-life and combine it with a shouen, while at the same time never once making it feel like it drags. It even has some potentially emotional bits in it, completely unrelated to their battles or many story as they encounter new companions -- and many old ones.
I have watched many animes over the years and am a very difficult person to impress when it comes to something new, or redoing something old, but this is up there as what I would consider to be one of the best animes I've watched.
