The BC Marine Mammal Rescue Society exists to promote rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine mammals in British Columbia.
There are multiple organizations along the coast of British Columbia that respond to marine mammals in distress, some of them capable of providing on-site care for animals that need it. British Columbia is also home to Canada's only rescue and rehabilitation facility specializing in marine mammal care.
We use our resources to support these organizations.
This stream is produced by the BC Marine Mammal Rescue Society, a non-profit registered in BC, Canada, with live feeds from the Vancouver Aquarium and the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.
Live feed cameras & chat are operated by amazing volunteers from around the world.
We would like to acknowledge that this broadcast is featuring images captured in Stanley Park, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.
The Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, operated by the Vancouver Aquarium, is an acute care veterinary hospital based in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The rescue centre rescues, rehabilitates and releases sick, injured, abandoned and orphaned marine mammals.
Every year, they admit between 150 and 180 marine mammals, most of them harbour seal pups. But they have also rescued Steller and California sea lions, Northern fur seals, harbour porpoises ─ and the occasional cold-stunned sea turtle.
We show northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) at the Vancouver Aquarium and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) at the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.
The harbour seal pups got separated from or were abandoned by their mothers or injured and are now being nursed back to health. They will be released back into the wild following rehabilitation.
The sea otters were rescued in the US and Canada but deemed non-releasable following rehabilitation due to the young age at the time of rescue & their inability to feed themselves and avoid predators.
It's complex! Our live stream is produced by a team of over 40+ volunteer live stream moderators and camera operators, working together to create a 24/7 program worth watching.
For this live stream, we use a custom-developed system based on OBS Studio, remote feeds from PTZ security cameras and a web-based backend for camera and stream control.
Our backend services are distributed between 2 Linode-powered web server instances in California.
